LAN II Production Services: (Freelance) 1980-1994, Chicago, IL

The first time I ran across the term "multi-media" it referred to elaborate slide shows with multiple slide projectors (and sometimes 16mm film projectors) synchronized to an audio tape via a dedicated computer called a ShowPro. I began programming on a ShowPro III which controlled six projectors, then graduated to the ShowPro V which could control 15 projectors. Today that medium is referred to as multi-image. Eventually the technology progressed to CP/M computers and direct control of 30 projectors, then DOS based computers.

In 1980 I had left Burson-Marsteller and was referred to company called Live Marketing. This began a ten year relationship where, as a captive freelancer, I was the Technical Director for all meetings and large trade shows and functioned as the line producer for all speaker support visuals and multi-image modules.

Technical Direction/Line Producer

Live Marketing, Chicago: Responsible for planning and execution of major corporate events from start to finish including budget, hotel and client liaison, staging, lights, sound, crew, projection. On-site supervision of more than 250 meetings and trade shows that used both AV and live talent; also completed necessary client changes on-site. Produced speaker support slides, multi-image modules and video segments for meetings and special events.

Near the end of my relationship with Live Marketing I purchased an state-of-the-art IBM computer graphics system and began producing the slides for the speaker support. By the time I no longer worked with Live Marketing I was ready to move into computer generated graphics for speaker support or Electronic Speaker Support, which is now known as presentation graphics.

In those DOS days we worked with a program called RIO to create the graphics and a program called Roll to show the graphics on huge three gun CRT video projectors. Those old DOS machines were toys by today's standards but we created shows that would stand up to anything PowerPoint can do today.

My technical leanings came into play as taking computers on the road in those days required a lot of TLC and the ability to take one apart and get it running again helped increase the demand for my services.
