When I started Pronto Advertising Corporation in the mid-70s, I was called upon to take photos for the ads we produced. I found that I really liked photography and have spent a considerable amount of time and money studying the subject. In 1980 I bought a pair of Nikon FGs with a autowinders and speedlights (flash), plus a couple of zoom lenses and began taking pictures.
In the early 80s I had access to the darkroom at a Chicago gay newspaper and began hanging out there learning black and white film developing and printing. In the mid-80s I became the news and events photographer for, Windy City Times. As WCT was not photo oriented, I eventually became the Chicago nightlife photographer for Metra Magazine.
What fun! Out every night, never a cover charge, and always in the front row. Of course, I couldn't drink much and I couldn't socialize much because there was always somewhere else to be, other photos to be taken. As my portfolio grew I began getting covers on Gay Chicago Magazine as well as Metra Magazine and some outside work doing ads and promotions. I relied heavily on my photography skills to create Out on the Coast magazine where I got to take all the cover photos, most of the interior photos and some of the background photos for the ads I created.
I still take photos, lots of them, and really enjoy photo assignments. Follow the links above to see some examples of the work I have done.
